A Day In The Life Of......

I am forever being asked, when do I get time to get any real work done. I regard the main part of my job is meeting people and giving advice and support, however what they mean is doing the numbers part of the job.

I thought I would therefore make this weeks Blog about a typical day, which was this Friday gone (I can just about remember what happened!)

8:00 - Straight to the office this morning, no networking planned so had the chance to catch up on some paper work. All new clients need an engagement letter and agent authority form prepared, (I have quite a few to prepare at the moment) so managed to get some prepared for two new clients.

9:00 - An Accountant has asked me to assist him with some tax planning, so I prepared an email to him setting out his clients options. Hopefully this will lead to more of my favourite type of work - tax planning. As I'm a real geek, I love the opportunity to paw through the tax legislation.

10:00 - First meeting of the day and I met with a lovely client who is running a brilliant business, which has been going three years or so. We were supposed to be discussing the accounts, but they had so many opportunities to explore, we ended up talking about how they could make better use of their time and really develop the business further. I hope they got a lot out of it.

12:00 - Meeting over, so travelled over to Shine in Harehills. I had time to kill before a lunch date and so thought I could catch up with anyone who was there. I have a few clients there and they appreciate it if I am there to answer questions or just chew the fat. Barry was there and he set up my computer so I can use the printer there, what a star! I had a brilliant phone call from a chap who I quoted two months ago, and he had now decided to use my services.

13:00 - My lunch date rang to cancel, leaving me hungry in Leeds. I decided to head back to the office in Harrogate to spend the afternoon catching up on paperwork.

14:00 - After having a brief pitstop, I got back to the office and decided that before I tackled the paperwork, I would do some marketing activities. Now this is breaking one of the cardinal rules that Paula at 6th level taught me in my time management course, I did what I regard as a more exciting job first, rather than the boring admin work that needs doing. I posted the Wetherby 4N meeting onto linked in and sent it round a few people, before seeing the error of my ways and starting on some of the letters I need to do. I had to bribe myself that if I got two letters done, I could then do a more 'fun' job which was completing a clients accounts. Who said Accountants are sad?!

15:00 - Continued with an accounts job started earlier in the week. I really need to have a sit down and a chat with this client, as they could be saving themselves a lot of tax. I find this with a lot of clients during the first year of acting. Once I get them straight on the reporting side, we can then look at the business doing a simple SWOT analysis and see where we go from there.

16:00 - Wow! Someone came into the office! It was the printer guy from downstairs. I do not often get unexpected visitors to my office, and so it always scares the life out of me when someone just pops in. I am about to start touring with my 'Ten Tax Tips' at 4N meetings throughout Yorkshire, so thought I had better get a good run of leaflets printed.

17:00 - I must have had about five phone calls in the space of an hour. Believe it or not there are still some sources of funding available for new businesses and a client rang to go through an application form with me. A couple of friendly networkers also rang just to catch up. Someone also rang with a VAT query. I went through a couple of options and hope that they went away happy.

17:45 - Thought that I really had done enough today. I always try to be home by 6 and given that I'm only a 5 minute drive away from home, thought I'd better pack up.

22:00 - Having gone out with my sister to celebrate her birthday, I had to bail out early as I was worn out. Its been a busy week. I had some great company during the wait at the bus stop and on the journey home thanks to some friends on Twitter.
